The purpose of this webinar is to provide an overview of organ and
tissue donation in the U.S. and in Michigan, including the current need
for organs and tissues in the population. The presentation will cover the
current standards, rules, and performance metrics that hospitals must
adhere to as well as the different types of organ donation (following
brain death versus following cardiac/circulatory death).

Objectives:
1. Discuss the Medicare and Joint Commission regulations around organ and tissue
donation.
2. Describe “clinical triggers” that are monitored and reported by all hospitals in Michigan.
3. Identify what constitutes a “timely” notification when patients either meet clinical
triggers or are deceased.
4. Characterize the qualities of an appropriate approach to the family or next-of-kin when
seeking consent for organ/tissue donation.
5. Discuss the implications of a Medical Examiner’s case on the ability to proceed with
organ and tissue donation.
