Falls Prevention Awareness Week

Beginning September 21, 2026, Falls Prevention Awareness week reminds us to focus on the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries in older adults. Falls happen at all ages and stages of life, but the impact of falls resulting from age-related physical challenges, combined with other unintentional injuries, can be staggering. Fall Prevention Awareness week prompts us to cultivate our proactive education, outreach, and family support inside and outside of our hospitals. The Older Adult Falls Subcommittee works to decrease falls by sharing ideas, identifying opportunities, and developing strategies to reduce falls. If this is a need for your organization, we’d love for you to join our group!
Fun and new ideas for 2026 Fall Prevention Awareness week also include “celebrating” this specific Injury Prevention topic by initiating fresh partnerships with Physical Therapists and Physicians with “Strong Bones and Steady Steps” in Rochester, and teaching balance improvement exercises with “Movement Matters” in Novi and Southfield. Also, an especially creative tool for specialty marketing, in Corewell Health’s West Michigan hospitals, providing a “cup of Joe” in the hospital coffee shops with a special coffee sleeve that offers a QR code, taking participants to web pages that promote local packaged balance and fall prevention classes. Lastly, a Fall Prevention Awareness week proclamation was read by West Bloomfield City Commissioners to acknowledge the importance of this topic, and “tips and tricks” for fall prevention were also aired on West Bloomfield local television.
On Wednesday October 28th at 1:00p the OAF sub-committee will collaborate with Jackson City Fire Department to host the community outreach event, kicking off the annual Injury Prevention Symposium, offered by Michigan Trauma Coalition leaders.
Registration is now open for the 2026 Michigan Trauma Coalition Injury Prevention Symposium, taking place on Thursday, October 29, 2026, at the American 1 Event Center in Jackson, Michigan. The Injury Prevention Symposium will bring together community partners, advocates, and professionals to learn, connect, and share strategies for preventing injuries.
